Road safety is a critical concern worldwide. Every year, millions of people lose their lives or suffer severe injuries due to road accidents. The Vision Zero initiative, which originated in Sweden in 1997, aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities and severe injuries while increasing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for all. The need for and importance of Vision Zero cannot be overstated. Saving lives doesn’t have to be costly; rather, it requires a shift in awareness and attitudes towards road safety.
The need for Road Safety
Alarming Statistics
• Global impact: According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.35 million people die each year because of road traffic crashes.
• Economic burden: Road traffic crashes cost most countries 3% of their gross domestic product (GDP).
- Vulnerable groups: Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists constitute over half of all road traffic deaths.
Personal and Societal Impact
• Human cost: Each road fatality leaves behind grieving families and communities. The emotional toll is immeasurable.
• Healthcare system: Road accidents put immense pressure on healthcare systems, consuming resources that could have been better used elsewhere.
• Economic consequences: Besides the direct costs, road accidents lead to loss of productivity and long-term disability, affecting the economy. Think of the fatal consequences of a person on road accident in early twenties, how his or her family and the society would be deprived of the enormous help which could have accrued over the whole life time.
The Vision Zero Approach
Core Principles
1. Ethical imperative: Life and health can never be exchanged for other benefits within society. In essence, safety must not be compromised for the sake of mobility.
2. Human error: People make mistakes, but these should not result in severe injury or death. The system should be designed to anticipate human error.
3. Responsibility: While road users are responsible for complying with traffic laws, those who design and maintain the road transport system share responsibility for the level of safety within the entire system.
4. Proactive measures: Preventive actions are emphasized over reactive responses. The goal is to prevent accidents before they occur.
These are only indicative. Main aim is to ensure SAFETY by all possible means.
Implementation Strategies
• Safe road infrastructure: Designing roads that account for human error can significantly reduce accidents. This includes features like roundabouts, pedestrian crossings, and segregated bike lanes.
• Speed management: Implementing appropriate speed limits and ensuring compliance through enforcement and technology (e.g., speed cameras).
• Vehicle safety: Promoting the use of vehicles with advanced safety features and ensuring regular maintenance.
• Public awareness: Educating the public about road safety and encouraging a culture of responsible road use.
· Strict enforcement of road safety norms. People at large, communities and the
government all join hands to bring down the number of road accidents.
The Importance of Awareness and Attitude
Public awareness campaigns
• Education programs: Schools and community centers can offer programs to educate both children and adults about road safety. I can remember very well, we used to go to different schools and clubs for discussion to enhance people’s awareness of road safety. On behalf of the American Society of Safety Professionals, India Chapter, we used to take it seriously. Such activities should continue everywhere.
• Media campaigns: Utilizing television, radio, and social media to spread awareness about the dangers of reckless driving and the importance of road safety measures.
Changing Attitudes
• Responsibility and accountability: Encouraging a sense of personal responsibility among road users. Understanding that every action on the road can have serious consequences.
• Community involvement: Engaging communities in road safety initiatives can foster a collective sense of responsibility. Local leaders and influencers can play a significant role in changing attitudes.
Saving lives doesn’t have to be expensive
Cost-effective measures
• Low-cost interventions: Simple measures like improved road markings, better signage, and creating pedestrian zones can have a significant impact on safety.
• Policy and legislation: Enforcing existing traffic laws more rigorously and introducing new policies where necessary can improve road safety without substantial financial investment.
• Technology use: Utilizing data and technology for better traffic management and accident prevention can be cost-effective. For example, using apps for route planning to avoid high-risk areas.

A short story:
While returning from the office one day, I observed one place which was barricaded for road accident. A cyclist was fatally hit by a truck. On mere curiosity, when we stopped and talked to nearby people, we could learn that both the cyclist and the truck driver were careless. Both were under pressure to reach their destination early. Now think of the condition of the victim’s family, if the victim is the sole earning member of the family. Should we be at all careless on the road, whether we are pedestrians, cyclist or a driver of motor vehicles?
Vision Zero is a transformative approach to road safety, emphasizing that every road traffic death is preventable. While the challenges are significant, the potential benefits are enormous. By prioritizing safety, promoting awareness, and encouraging a shift in attitudes, we can make our roads safer for everyone. Saving lives does not have to be costly; it requires commitment, responsibility, and a proactive approach. Let us strive for a future where road accidents are a rarity, and everyone can travel safely.
By championing Vision Zero, we not only aim to reduce traffic fatalities and injuries but also enhance the overall quality of life. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and together, we can make a difference.
