Nostalgia often opens doors to precious stories and legacies that shape our life and identity. My grandfather Hara Govinda Smritiratna was the founder professor and owner of Chhatna Anandamayee Chattuspathi, a Sanskrit School in line with former Gurukul system of education. In early twentieth century getting Smritiratna title was extremely difficult in India. This Smritiratna title indicates that my grandfather was not just a teacher but also a figure of great cultural importance within the community. He used to be regarded as a custodian of knowledge, helping to foster intellectual growth and spiritual learning. Naturally he was very tough for students and also to us. When we were young, every day we had to sit down to read, whether we used to concentrate on studies or not.
Not only grandparents, our parents, senior family members and relatives often told us to “Read and Write Daily.” It was a gentle, almost daily reminder, ingrained in us as part of our routine, but at the time, the deeper significance of this advice often went unnoticed. Now, as we grow older, the wisdom of those words becomes clearer, and we begin to understand the powerful reasons behind them. Now we tell our children and grandchildren to read and write daily. Reading regularly isn’t just about gaining knowledge, it’s about cultivating a mindset of lifelong learning, curiosity, and intellectual growth.
